How do football betting odds work?
Football odds represent the likelihood of an outcome in a football match – whether that’s as simple as win, lose, or draw or the likelihood of a particular player scoring, or a red card being shown. In simple terms, short odds (e.g. 2 to 1) indicate that an event is likely to happen. By contrast, long odds – e.g. 100 to 1 – suggest unlikely outcomes. For example, if a Premier League club faces a League Two club in the FA Cup, the odds on the League Two club to win will typically be long.
Can football odds change after I place a bet?
Pre-match odds can change when events have a potential impact on the outcome of a match. Returning to our FA Cup match example, while the odds on the League Two club winning will usually be long, they may be shortened if the Premier League manager saves his star players for another game.
With live betting, odds change throughout the game according to its progress, meaning you can bet based on the very latest action.
What is outright betting on football?
As well as the result of a particular match, you can also bet on which team will be the overall (or “outright”) winner of a tournament (e.g. the World Cup) or league (e.g. the Premier League).
Prior to the start of a tournament or season, outright odds are typically more static. However, odds are sometimes lengthened or shortened based on events that don’t relate to the matches themselves. For example, if a football club makes a surprise major signing just before the season begins, their odds of winning the league may be shortened.
Can I bet on a football match already in progress?
Yes! This is what’s known as in-play or live betting – and you can place bets right up until the final whistle. The advantage of this is that you can place a bet based on the very latest information or events; for example, an injury or sending off. Odds typically change very quickly, and you may see “market suspended” messaging in the immediate aftermath of an event such as a penalty, but you will soon have the option to bet again based on new odds.
What is over-under betting?
In terms of football betting, this is a bet on whether a certain statistic in a game – e.g. the number of goals, corners, cards or shots on target – will be over or under a certain number.
With an over-under bet, the actual result of the match is irrelevant to whether you win your bet – several different results can lead to a payout. For example, a 2 – 2 draw and a 4 – 0 win are both winning results for an over 3.5 goals bet.
You may wonder why over-under bets refer to 2.5 or 3.5 goals when such a score is not possible. It’s actually precisely because these scores are impossible that the “under-over” format works. For example, if the terms of a bet were “Over/under 3 goals”, no one could win if there are exactly 3 goals. Because 3.5 goals is an impossible result, it is a clear win or lose – 3 goals is under, 4 is over, and there is no scenario where it is impossible to win.
What is early payout?
10bet’s 2 Goals Ahead Early Payout Offer offer allows you to place a pre-match bet on the basis that a two-goal lead at any point counts as a win. For example, if the team you bet on to win is 2 – 0 by half-time, we will pay the bet as a win, even if the other team fight back to earn a win or draw. However, the odds on a standard bet with no early payout option are usually higher.
Can I place an accumulator bet on football?
Absolutely! Accumulators or “accas” can look complicated, but in simple terms, an acca bet is a series of linked single bets, with a win on the first leg activating the second (and so on), and the winnings from the previous leg becoming your stake. You can keep it as simple as a two-leg accumulator, or combine as many as 20 selections.
You can include any football market in your acca and also combine live and pre-match – even two matches starting at the same time – but not two or more from the same match (for example, the result and the number of goals scored). You can, however, combine two or more markets from one match into a single bet with our Bet Builder feature.
